The Women of Rice
Our Present / Their Future – Spring 2015
Last spring, the Center was thrilled to launch a campus-wide initiative to document and archive the contributions women have made and will continue to make to Rice University. As a part of this ongoing project, a new photo exhibit titled "Our Present/Their Future" is now on display in the main first-floor hallway of Fondren Library.
The exhibit will be on display through March 31, 2015 and is free and open to the public. The exhibit features the portraits and stories of 13 prominent and influential Rice women, including former trustees, faculty, and staff. These women steered the university toward a future vision of Rice, one abundant with opportunities that we all enjoy today. Their stories are part of the remarkable historical legacy of women at Rice University.
Left – Mary Wheeler received her Ph.D. in Mathematics from Rice in 1971, joined the new department of Mathematical Sciences (now Computational and Applied Mathematics) in 1973, and rose to full professor by 1980. She is currently at the University of Texas.
Right – Oveta Culp Hobby, a business, media, military, and political leader with a national career that spanned over four decades. In 1967 she became the first woman named to the Rice Broad of Trustees.
On March 12, the Center will host a closing reception for the exhibit following the Women's History Month lecture by Margaret Jacobs.
