SWGS 201 Students Bring LGBT Houston to Wikipedia
For the last four years, the Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies class (SWGS 201, taught by Dr. Brian Riedel) has conducted a Community Research Project, in which students research and interview people who have made contributions to Houston area LGBT communities. In that time, they have collected 62 brief oral histories, and helped Houstonians to see their city in a different way.
In 2010, the students took the Community Research Project to another level, posting their work to Wikipedia. Rice News recently wrote an article about the project. Beyond the Wikipedia pages, the students' work will be archived in the Woodson Research Center of Fondren Library, and on the project wiki for Houston ARCH (Area Rainbow Collective History), a consortium of Houston area organizations and institutions that collaborate to preserve and promote access to Houston's LGBT history.
